Oxygen dropping in the New Pond

Oxygen levels in my garden ponds since the beginning of September: levels have suddenly dropped in the New Pond following the covering of snow. The graph shows the date since the beginning of September along the horizontal axis, and the level of oxygen in milligrammes of oxygen in each litre of water on the vertical axis.

After the snow fall, the oxygen levels in the New Pond are starting to fall. Levels are already about half what they were a few days ago when the water was only covered by ice.

In the Old Pond levels were already very low – and don’t seem to have dropped any further.

I haven’t measured under ice oxygen levels in Katy’s Pond yet – it’s our shallowest.

It looks like an opportunity to experiment with clearing away snow to see whether it has any effect.
