Lakes warm up, but what about ponds?

A well-known lake

There are about 304 million ponds and lakes in the world.

How do I know? I read this paper by pond-loving freshwater ecologist John Downing.

About 300 million of these are less than 10 ha – so might justifiably be called ponds – the international Ramsar convention on wetlands calls a pond a thing up to 8 ha in area.

So it was interesting to hear that NASA has spotted that big lakes are warming up.

But I naturally wondered – what about the other 300 million ponds?

Are they warming up too?
