Can we stop pollution with ponds?

A newly constructed pond for intercepting pollutants from farmland: this pond, is being very carefully studied to assess whether it can intercept pollutants.

There’s not much clean water left in most of the countryside so there’s naturally a lot of interest in things that might help to clean things up.

And making ponds to intercept dirty water and remove some of the pollutants is of interest to a lot of people – in this case the pond is intended to intercept soil and fertilisers (and perhaps pesticides) which have washed off of farmland.

Does it work? Well, possibly, ánd the picture above shows one pond where very detailed measurements are being made to see whether it really is possible, and exactly how much difference it makes.

Alongside making ponds which only have clean water running into them, this may also be a good idea.
