Is there a drought?

Well, we’re heading that way.

The National Hydrological Monitoring Programme says:

For the UK as a whole, the provisional January-May rainfall total is the lowest since 1964 with exceptional deficiencies across parts of western Britain.”

So after some of the wettest summers for years in 2007, 2008 and 2009 now we’re seeing the pendulum swing the other way.

I tend to agree that we are heading towards a drought. Living at Poulton-Le-Fylde, Lancashire, we have had very little rainfall this spring/summer. In recent years good, sunny, and fairly dry springs have given way to wet weather in June with plenty of rain throughout the rest of the summer untill autumn when it has tended to pick up with a bit of an Indian summer.
However, this year June has just continued to stay mostly dry and very hot at times. The water level in my pond had dropped by 17 cm which has never happend before during the last 10 years since I made it and it is the reason why I reluctantly topped it up using the hose pipe. Any rain that has fallen has been of very little value to us untill last night when we had many hours of rain, some of which was very heavy & thundery. It’s arrival came just in time as many plants were beginning to show signs of distress.
There is more rain due on Thursday but even though the garden will be ok for a little while in my opinion it will take more that this to prevent a drought.
