Natural England calls for children to go pond dipping

Last week the wildlife writer Stephen Moss said at the launch of a new Government initiative to get children out into the countryside that ‘we run the risk of raising a generation of ‘cotton wool kids’

So doing our bit to get one little girl out of the daily cotton wool, our buspersons holiday included plenty of dipping for tadpoles.

In the New Forest there are plenty of opportunities to do this. Notice, no dipping platforms getting in the way and shallow water a few inches deep right at the edge of the pond.

The problem is, in other parts of the countryside you have to look much harder to find a pond where you can see a normal range of pond wildlife.
