The garden pond this morning

Here’s the pond today – probably not a sight we’re going to see  again for a while.

I’ll be taking some more dissolved oxygen measurements later to see how the latest lot of ice cover is affecting the pond.

But one thing we do know about snow over ice is that it blocks out the light and so slows down photosynthesis, and underwater oygen production.

This really can reduce your dissolved oxygen levels if it persists so it may just be worth thinking about clearing snow from iced up ponds if it doesn’t thaw quickly and you think you might have vulnerable animals (including fish).

But on the other hand you could just let nature take its course.
