Shallow water for wildlife ponds

1-2 cm deep

Shallow water must be very shallow: 1-2 cm deep

I made a very rough sketch earlier of the cross section of my pond.

Now I thought I’d say a bit more about shallow water.

Wildlife in ponds generally prefers shallow water.

But what is shallow water?

If you take a look at the typical preformed ponds you see on sale in garden centres you might assume that shallow is 20-30 cm.

In fact shallow is 1-2 cm.

How do you make shallow water? By having edges that are so shallow they barely have any water on them at all.

A good cross section would look something like the picture above.

This is something you have to make: you can’t buy preformed pond linings that look like this.
