The state of ponds in Britain

Launch of the Countryside Survey with Hilary Benn

The results of an important UK survey are out today: the Countryside Survey.

For everyone interested in ponds, and in the rest of the countryside too, the results highlight worrying on-going loss of biodiversity – with a few crumbs of comforting improvement.

Ponds rich in wildlife have gone from large parts of the countryside, and their overall condition has got worse since 1996 – though you won’t find this fact mentioned in the executive summary of the report.

Even though pond numbers went up, overall about three quarters of all ponds were in poor or very poor condition.

We really will need those clean and unpolluted ponds in our garden’s.
