Mucky pond

summer 2007

My pond looking very murky: summer 2007

I said that my pond had been pretty green and soupy for the first year.

Its crystal clear now because there are masses of water fleas which have filtered all the algae from the water.

They colonised naturally somehow – I didn’t add them, or mud or plants that they might have arrived on.

So this is just a picture to show you how the pond looked earlier on when still a greeny-brown algal soup. Pretty horrible, and a bit surprising given that its virtually pure rainwater, with little of the nitrogen and phosphorus that normally makes algae grow.

But in the absence of either the water fleas to ‘graze’ the algae, or big plants to take up the nutrients, perhaps not so strange.
