- Grassy edges would improve this pond
I tried out our new index for assessing garden pond wildlife value on this pond yesterday.
It had worms (score 1), pond snails (also score 1) and diving beetles (score 5).
A total score of 7 indicates that this pond could be improved quite a bit – 25 would be a reasonable score, and 45 would be excellent.
Even though the pond deosn’t score too high it’s still used by frogs for breeding.
How could you improve this pond? It would be worth letting the grass grow into the water to provide more habitat – at present it’s completely dominated by leaf litter, so the struture of the pond is rather uniform.
